KAPIT: The search and capture operation for a crocodile in the Mujong River has been temporarily suspended after failing to locate any signs of the reptile.

The four-day operation involving the police, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Forest Department, aimed to capture the crocodile believed to be residing in Mujong River, which is near Rh Nanga Oyan and SK Nanga Oyan.

While the exact size of the crocodile remains unknown, it has reportedly posed a threat to the safety of residents and their pets, with sightings of the creature attempting to prey on livestock in the area.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported thus far.

Despite their efforts in installing traps along the river, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson stated that the operation has not succeeded in capturing the crocodile.

“Today, the Forest Department and the other agencies made the decision to dismantle the traps installed both upstream and downstream of the river.

“Residents and school staff were briefed on the current operation’s status and were advised to be vigilant and remain cautious.

“For the time being, the operation has been temporarily halted until new discoveries and information arise from nearby residents,” the spokesman said.

The operation commenced last Monday (June 26) as the agencies involved embarked on a two-hour journey along logging routes to reach the scene.

Following a comprehensive briefing by the Forest Department, residents were temporarily prohibited from engaging in any activities within the river to ensure their safety.

Efforts to capture the crocodile began with the installation of four traps at strategic locations along the river.

Despite the increased effort, the crocodile remained elusive and no sightings or captures were made.
