BINTULU: GPS Bintulu candidate Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing has come out strongly against an opposition move to belittle the Port Klang Free Trade Zone (PKFZ).

He accused DAP Sarawak treasurer Chiew Chui Sing of spreading rumours regarding the performance of PKFZ at a time when all parties are struggling with the post-pandemic and economic recovery process.

“Recently, Chiew maligned PKFZ in various events to gain votes and support for his son, Tony Chiew Chan Yew.

“He only knows how to belittle the port, but does not emphasise on the economic benefits of the PKFZ, including the operation of the free trade zone since 2005.

“The port has successfully attracted investment of RM7 billion, domestic and foreign investment, commercial land with a 100 per cent occupancy rate, light industry and others,” he said in a statement yesterday (Nov 17).

Tiong who is Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president said in fact several financial news reports have repeatedly mentioned that PKFZ’s rate of return has contributed to the economic growth of Port Klang.

“Didn’t Chiew read the news or do research? If this kind of attitude goes on, I fear that foreign investors will not come here to invest in our country.

“This will indirectly become a stumbling block and will slow down the process of national economic recovery which was originally moving smoothly thus proving that DAP is trying to destroy the national economy and cause the people to suffer,” he said.

“If Chiew wants to make any false allegations, there is no problem but he will have to face any consequences in the future including legal action,” he warned.
