Deputy Minister assures specialist shortage at Sibu Hospital will be resolved

SIBU: The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) will resolve the shortage of specialists and ophthalmologists at Sibu Hosipital.

Deputy Minister of Health Lukanisman Awang Sauni announced the commitment after a briefing by the hospital’s director Dr Nanthakumar  Thirunavukkarasu on the challenges faced by the hospital.

“I have assessed the effectiveness of Sibu Hospital in handling emergencies, especially in the Yellow and Red Zones.

“The hospital bed management system that they implement could be replicated in other hospitals,” he said when met by reporters after his working visit to the hospital yesterday (July 20).

During the visit, the Sibuti MP also learned about the successful practices at Sibu’s Hospital Medan (special hybrid modular intensive care unit set up for Covid-19 patients), which proved beneficial in managing past pandemics.

“The effective strategies used at Hospital Medan have been adopted by hospital in Miri and Kuching divisions,” he said.

Lukanisman was also briefed by the Sibu Division Health Officer Dr Teh Ho Jun on the pressing need to establish new clinics and upgrade existing ones in the area to meet the growing demand, especially for Class 3 health clinics.

“To proceed with this proposal, I have urged the divisional health officer to collaborate with the Department of Land and Survey and the state government to identify suitable sites,” he added.

Considering the population growth in Sibu, fuelled by the construction of new houses, the demand for healthcare services is escalating.

He said he is aware that equipment like X-ray machines at the Sibu Hospital require trained personnel, a common requirement across all hospitals he visited.
