SIBU: A bodyguard’s role extends beyond physical protection and includes being a first responder during crises, says Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

During the Closing Ceremony of the Basic Bodyguard course and the Sarawak Close Protection Association’s 1st anniversary, the Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister stressed the importance of bodyguards possessing basic life-saving skills like CPR and wound management.

“In the critical moments before professional medical help arrives, a well-informed bodyguard can make the difference between life and death,” he said.

He said this in his speech read out by Kapitan So Teck Kee here last night (Nov 17).

“It forms the foundation upon which all specialised skills are built. I hope that all of you here will continue your pursuit to equip yourself with more knowledge and skills to become better in your profession,” he added.

He also said that basic skills are fundamental to qualify as a proficient bodyguard.

“It qualifies you for the job. Thus, it is important for any bodyguard to have a basic skill set to qualify themselves as bodyguards.

“This will equip them with the ability to act accordingly in times of need. Skilled bodyguards should know the most appropriate course of action in any given circumstances.

“Without this foundation, the bodyguard may find themselves ill-prepared to anticipate and neutralise potential dangers to the people or clients,” he said.

He commended the organisers for the course’s success, expressing hope that the participants gained valuable insights.
