KUCHING: Drug abuse-related divorce cases have risen by 10 per cent in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said even though there were many divorce cases involving other reasons, those related to drug abuse among Muslim couples had increased.

She said 561 couples divorced in Sarawak throughout the COVID-19 pandemic period.

“This has become a great challenge for us, Muslims. That is why family seminar programmes in cooperation with various agencies should be held often to overcome this problem,” she said when officiating at the Rabbani Family Seminar in conjunction with the Sarawak state-level Quran recital at Dewan Kompleks Islam Sarawak today.

Hasidah said that nationwide, of the 95,500 people involved in drug abusencases 96 per cent of were men.

“Among the cases reported, most of them involve youths. As we all know, youths are part of our future. So I would like to call upon JAIS and Persatuan Mencegah Dadah Malaysia (PEMADAM) to work together and handle this issue that involves our future generation.
