ROAD SIGN FIXATION

KUCHING: Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has been advised to not take things into their own hands and be a law breaker.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Sim Kiang Chiok said Dapsy should instead write in to request Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to replace the missing Chinese characters on road signs in the city.

“They are supposedly law makers and should not be law breakers. And they are setting a very bad example to all, and could create chaos and lawlessness in orderly Sarawak.

“Their act is totally not acceptable of a political party where most of its members are lawyers,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Sim was commenting on Dapsy’s action in pasting Chinese characters on road signs at Jalan Main Bazaar, Wayang Street and Jalan Green Hill here on Thursday.

“The streets in the historic areas of Kuching have their Chinese names. And DBKU have always allowed the Chinese names to be on the road signs till today,” he noted.

He said among the areas with Chinese signage included Gambier Street, India Street, Ewe Hai Street, Carpenter Street, Bishopgate, China and Upper China Street.

“These are at our heritage areas and hold much of our history. Even the Mandarin names have meaning in its history and reflect our rich diverse cultures and traditions. For example, Carpenter Street’s Mandarin name is Attap Street which reflects the old street that was burnt down in the late 1800,” he said.

He added in Stakan, the local council recently had some problem with the road signs and DAP had tried to capitalise on the technical problem faced then.

He said DAP Sarawak’s claim that the Chinese characters were missing because Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was ‘kow-towing’ to Umno’s Malay and PAS’s Islamic agenda, was totally untrue.

“GPS have always been inclusive and a moderate government, while DAP Sarawak is on a negative propaganda to break up our very precious unity just to win votes. As such, it is very irresponsible of DAP Sarawak to disrupt the peaceful and harmonious society in the state,” he stressed.

He said DAP Sarawak was doing the Malayan politics which was bad for Sarawakian and must be rejected.

“GPS do not use race and religion to win Sarawakian votes but instead gain the support through our policy of a diverse, multiracial and power sharing among all Sarawakians,” he said adding that GPS was the only government that recognised UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) and set up Unifor to look after the affair and development of other religions.

He reminded Sarawakian to not be aroused and misled by DAP, as the party had not performed in its 22 months as federal government and they had shown their ability to not hold onto their promises such as the 20 percent oil and gas royalties, return 50 percent of tax collected among others.

“We have tried them and they are really no good. Even the Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei have resigned from the party to show that DAP is not for Sarawak,” said Sim.
