KUCHING: The Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) hosted the third installment of its ‘SCOPE Distinguished Speakers’ Series’ on Thursday.

The session, entitled “Reversing the Irreversible: Donut Economy & Planetary Health to Safeguard Our Future,” brought together esteemed speakers from both private and public sectors to discuss pressing matters such as economic challenges, sustainability, environmental issues, social welfare, and planetary health.

This edition of the series concentrated on addressing the concepts of the doughnut economy and the implications for planetary health.

The conference took place in the Jasmine and Orchid Room at SCOPE, with Prof Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University, delivering the keynote address.

Dr. Jemilah illuminated the subject of planetary health and the concept of planetary boundaries, also providing an introduction to doughnut economics. Her talk highlighted the complexities of planetary health and advocated for a systemic approach in confronting existential threats. Furthermore, she explained the necessity of integrating these principles into policy formulation, programme development, and strategic planning.

Also present were Deputy State Secretary (Administrative) Datuk Buckland Bangik and Morshidi Frederick, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development.
