Drugs: Police make 1,314 arrests so far this year

KUCHING: Sarawak police continue their fight against drugs this year with 1,314 arrests made between January 1 and March 5.

State police commissioner Datuk Azman Yusof said the number of arrests made increased by 289 as compared to 1,025 arrests during same period last year.

According to him, the number of suspects found to be in possession of drugs has also increased by 66 cases compared to 317 recorded last year,” he said in a statement today.

The State Narcotics Criminal Investigations Department (NCID) recorded an increase of drug abusers (those tested positive for drugs), by 131 cases from 599 cases recorded last year.

Cases involving drug supply have also increased – by 92 cases from 109 cases recorded last year.

As for rape cases, there have been an increase of 14 cases compared to the same period last year which recorded 23 cases while crime involving property saw an increase of 97 cases from 859 cases recorded last year.

However, there has been a decline in murder cases with only six cases this year compared to eight last year.

Gang robbery cases also recorded a decline, with a total of 40 cases this year compared to 50 last year.
