KUCHING: Hope Place is appealing to the community for assistance to support two elderly siblings residing in a deteriorated wooden house in Sungai Apong.

A member of the public has brought to the attention of the NGO the squalid living conditions of two brothers, 66-year-old Chin Kim Chong and 75-year-old Ching Ming who also lack stable incomes.

Kim Chong, who has cataracts, does odd jobs from time to time, such as gardening at nearby houses, washing dishes at coffee shops and most days he will collect recycled items to sell just to get a little pocket money to get by.

The brothers refuse to move elsewhere to live. Their rundown place has been their family home since they were children. Although in a ramshackle state, the house is the only thing they have left.

The house only has a dirt floor with some parts covered with wooden boards to walk on. The roof leaks everywhere and because of this, there are puddles of water in some parts of the house.

The bathroom is totally inaccessible and so the brothers use an outhouse instead. Hope Place also observed that the house is empty, void of any furniture, except for all the collected recycled items piling here and there.

The woman who alerted Hope Place shared with the NGO that she and her sister had been providing assistance to the brothers, offering food and occasionally assigning odd jobs while compensating them.

The siblings emphasised that without the assistance of others, they would find themselves in a state of destitution, expressing profound gratitude for the kindness and support they had received.

Those interested in helping the Chin brothers may contact Hope Place or Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) at 082-505987 for more information.
