KOTA SAMARAHAN: The theme of this year’s 20th Mini Film Festival (MFF) of ‘Search’ showcases a strong dedication to bring together filmmakers, artists, films, and audiences.

The festival is organised by Universiti Sarawak Malaysia (UNIMAS) Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts Cinematography Programme.

The annual festival was first organised in 2004. This year marks the 20th year of the festival; it
began with the ‘Duduk dan Tonton 1: Garek’ at the university. The festival will continue until July this year.

‘Duduk dan Tonton 1’, which was free to attend, ended on a high note on Wednesday (Apr 3) with the audience eagerly anticipating the second session on April 24.

New Sarawak Tribune managed to interview with some of the audience who attended “Duduk dan Tonton 1: Garek”.

I’m thrilled about the success of “Duduk dan Tonton 1” as I was involved and contributed to it. It was a great achievement for us, and we’re optimistic that the next “Duduk dan Tonton” event will draw an even larger audience, perhaps double that of today’s turnout. I also look forward to the next event where we collaborate with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). It would be great to have FINAS join us and provide us with valuable insights on the world of cinema.

I feel like it’s a different kind of experience, reminiscent of ‘Wayang Pacak’ (puppet show). While I’m not sure if it’s common in Sarawak, it seems to be less prevalent in Peninsula Malaysia. The genre for tonight’s mini film is incredibly thought-provoking. It explores the stereotypical portrayal of individuals who exploit religion for personal gain. It was quite enlightening, I really enjoyed it.

This is my first time I’m experiencing something like this since entering UNIMAS. I was really excited to watch the film with a large crowd of people. Before, I would only watch films either at the cinema or on my laptop. Despite the scorching weather, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope to be part of the second “Duduk dan Tonton” event.

I was happy and excited to watch the film. The theme of wearing “Sarong” evokes a wave of nostalgia within me. I am anticipating a much larger audience for the next “Duduk dan Tonton” and hope that the festival will showcase more mini films for people to watch and appreciate. I also hope the festival will show different genres like horror or action for upcoming mini films.
