KUCHING: Coaches are reminded to adhere to the benchmark and avoid biases when selecting athletes for the upcoming Malaysia Games 2024 (SUKMA 2024).

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said coaches play a critical role in determining the team’s outcomes and the athletes chosen for upcoming events.

“We depend on the coaches to provide us information such as the athlete’s stamina, skills and performance.

“We have our own benchmarking and we should follow it,” Abdul Karim told reporters when met at the Sarawak State Stadium here today (Nov 19).

Abdul Karim said his ministry also aligns with the coaches’ evaluations when considering athletes fit to represent the state and the nation.

“I feel that either in Sarawak or at a national level. We have our own format to choose the athletes that would represent the state or the country,” he said.

Addressing a recent viral complaint by a coach on social media about football player selections for the upcoming SUKMA 2024, Abdul Karim assured to investigate the matter thoroughly.
