KUCHING: Residents of Kampung Tabuan Dayak are urging the authorities to expedite the realignment of Sungai Tabuan for fear of more flooding in the area.

Kampung Tabuan Dayak residents voiced their worry that floods would again occur in the area as it is a long standing issue that is yet to be solved.

Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) Deputy Director Law Wee said the project design to widen and deepen the river was still being finalised.

“We know Sungai Tabuan is getting narrower so the capacity is not there.

“That is why it is causing a lot of floods in this area. So with a proper realignment of the river and a proper formation, we are going to increase the width and the depth of the drainage,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune after a site inspection near Tabuan Jaya here.

Wee expected the project to be completed within the next one to three years.

“We are rushing to get it done, so with the help of the government, hopefully, it can be completed as soon as possible,” he added.

The realignment of the river will involve widening and deepening work from Lorong 10 Tabuan Jaya to the bridge at Jalan Wan Alwi.
