DALAT: Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah was given the honour to officiate at the Pesta Kaul held at Sg Kut Muara.

According to the Dalat assemblywoman, the kaul’ is a ritual to appease the spirits of the sea and forest in order to get to be blessed with better harvests and abundance of food. Apart from that it is also seen as cleansing themselves from evil spirits.

“This occasion is done annually, whereby the offerings to the spirits are prepared in ‘serahang’ (offering baskets) which are placed on a decorated pillar,” said the Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Minister.

“The offerings include bertih beras (rice), pulut kuning (yellow gluttonous rice) , penyaram (pancake) , papit, rokok (cigarette), sirih and pinang (betel nut). The villagers would make preparations for the serahang’ for at least one week before the actual day,” she explained in her Facebook page.

On another matter, during the same day, Fatimah also handed over a minor rural project (MRP) allocation amounting to RM30,000 to the new Masjid Baharu Kpg Sg Kut Tengah to cover the cost of preparing site for the mosque construction. Another RM10,000 was also allocated by the minister to upgrade a section of the Masjid Al-Muslihin.
