KUCHING: Sarawak welcomes the setting up of a special court to handle crimes against children.
Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah told reporters this after attending the “Qurban” (slaughter of animals in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha) ceremony held at Surau Al-Mualimin in Taman Desa Guru, Petra Jaya yesterday.
According to Fatimah, the court is important because child victims suffer from stress and trauma and their emotions are greatly affected.
“The first special court was set up in Peninsular Malaysia. In a child friendly court, the children will not feel stressed, scared or traumatic because of the environment and the officers involved are very child friendly.
“We in Sarawak welcome this move and we would like to thank Women, Family and Community Development, Minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim and her ministry, and also the federal government for setting up the special court in the state, too,” said Fatimah.
17 cows were slaughtered yesterday in conjunction with Aidiladha at Surau Al-Mualimin, Taman Desa Guru.
The meat was distributed to six nearby schools and 25 children from the Nur Murni Welfare and Education Organisation.
