KUCHING: The Sukan Perpaduan event held by the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and state Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) is set to foster stronger ties between the two ministries in preparation for the upcoming Malaysia Games 2024 (SUKMA 2024).

Minister Hannah Yeoh said today’s (Nov 19) Sukan Perpaduan event is a platform for staff and officers from both ministries to come together and establish camaraderie.

“I see this as something that is very important, pre-sukma, to ensure a sense of togetherness for the coming months ahead.

“This is also an opportunity to learn about the sukan rakyat (traditional sports) in Sarawak,” she said when met by reporters after officiating the ‘KBS MYSED Sukan Perpaduan 2023’ at the Sarawak State Stadium this morning (Nov 19).

Yeoh noted that preparations for SUKMA are progressing smoothly, with ongoing discussions ensuring comprehensive arrangements for next year’s event.

MYSED Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah echoed Yeoh’s sentiments, hoping that the relationships formed during the two-day Sukan Perpaduan would extend well beyond the SUKMA period.

“Both ministries are taking care of the youth and sports. In politics, it goes above board. In our efforts to develop sports and to grow the youths. This is one way to bridge the gaps between the Federal and State ministries,” he said.

He disclosed that improvement and upgrading works for facilities are scheduled to commence in December and will be completed by August, just before SUKMA kicks off.

Also present at the event was MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick.
