KUCHING: The Federal government is ready to assist Sarawak in establishing its own cattle farm if needed in the future, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said it is not an obstacle to help the state in the livestock sector even though it is under the jurisdiction of the state government.

Fadillah speaks to the media. Ibrahim (right) also present during the interview.

“Nevertheless, in order to create a livestock farm, there are several factors that need to be followed, including the breed of cattle, nutrition, and the appropriate site for a livestock farm to be set up.

“To make it on a large scale, we not only need technology but also expertise, which is the most important thing to keep the sector going,” he said when met by reporters after attending the sacrifice ceremony at Masjid Darul Ibadah Kudei Lama, Kampung Kudei Lama Satok this afternoon.

He said expertise and the use of the latest technology in the livestock sector should be mastered first so that more livestock can be produced, hence reducing dependence on imported cattle.

Fadillah, who is also Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said the matter requires a large investment when it is necessary to bring in the latest technology and expertise in the aspects of nutrition, care, and breeds that are required.

“This is because if we have a good breed, then it can produce better results,” he said.

This is in regards to the Minister of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, who said Sarawak has targeted the production of up to 10,000 cattle by 2030.

This is to reduce the dependence on importing cattle from Australia and Sabah.
