KUCHING: Local authorities here are urged to step up efforts in fine-tuning their road maintenance system.

Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said besides awarding such projects out to contractors, the local authorities must also ensure there is a department that monitors and ensures that the projects are implemented properly and are up to standard.

“It is absolutely crucial for local councils and also the relevant authorities to not only ensure that works are completed by the respective contractors in a timely manner but also to make sure that all such works are up to proper standards,” he said.

He said this in a statement issued today (Dec 24) after receiving complaints from the public about the sub par road condition along Jalan Sungai Tapang.

Despite its recent repair works, he noted that there are now potholes and crocodile cracks along the same stretch of road.

“This poor condition of the road clearly means that the work done by the previous contractor was not up to standard. It is clear that the road base was not done properly.

“This causes ponding of water underground, which leads to the crocodile cracks.

“I urge the local authorities to look into this matter with urgency and to fix the said road,” he added.
