MIRI: A total of 15 missions were carried out by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department transporting 33 Covid-19 patients including persons under investigation during the movement control order (MCO) period.

According to the director, Khirudin Drahman, the missions involved nearly 1,000 foremen statewide.

“Those were among the risks that we faced as frontliners while carrying out our duties, but we tried to protect ourselves,” he said.

He said a lot of people did not know what firemen had to deal with during the period.

“To reduce public tension (during that period of MCO) we carried out the missions (transporting patients) during the night,” he said.

Meanwhile, a total 1,361 sanitation operations in public areas (statewide) have been conducted by the department throughout the pandemic period since March.

Concerning relief efforts in combating Covid-19 in Miri Division, Khirudin said 58 missions were carried out delivering food packs the needy.

“Our main challenge in the early stage was the lack of adequate transporters (helicopters) to move the food supplies to remote areas, but we eventually overcame the difficulties,” he said when met yesterday (July 9) after he presented excellence service awards (APC) to 51 firemen from zone four, five, six and seven in Miri
