SIBU: The scorched remains of a man were found in one of four houses destroyed by a fire in the wee hours on Monday (Mar 29).

The fire which started around 1.50am blazed its way across two rows of wooden buildings made up of 14 units of houses at Tiong Hua Road.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the victim has been identified as Chiu Woei Ming, 45, a labourer.

Earlier, the police chief said the victim was identified through an interview with his mother who only called him Ameng, a divorcee in his 40s.

“The burnt victim was found face down under a pile of charred wood among the remains of one of the houses.

“When the fire broke out, Ameng was in his room while his mother was in another room. The mother was rescued by some people who had rushed in to help,” he said.

The man’s remains had been taken to Sibu Hospital, and the case is classified as sudden death.
