SIBURAN: Housewives will be trained in fire safety through the Housewives Programme   (Program Suri Rumah), said Bomba Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman.

“This programme focuses on housewives who are at home full time while their husbands and children are at work and in school.

“They will be trained by women fire officers,” he revealed in his speech at the Fire Safety Awareness Programme held in conjunction with a Christmas celebration and appreciation ceremony for firefighters at the Siburan fire station on Wednesday (Dec 23).

He went on to explain the programme, which was first introduced during a Summer Camp programme in Mulu on Sept 24, would teach housewives how to prevent and fight fires.

Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Willie Mongin, who is also Puncak Borneo MP, welcomed the programme.

“It is good to educate housewives on fire safety as based on research, most fires happen to spread from the kitchen.

“Housewives need to know how to prevent and fight fires so that they will not panic whenever there is a fire,” he said.

During the celebration, the State Fire and Rescue Department also held a colouring competition which attracted 23 participants from four primary schools.

Eleven Kampung Simpok volunteer firefighters also received tokens of appreciation for their active involvement with the Siburan fire station in operations, especially the search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Khirudin revealed that a total of 21 villages had set up volunteer firefighting teams   involving a total of 233 participants in Zone 2 (Samarahan) since 2016.
