KUCHING: In a heartwarming display of compassion, local firefighters responded swiftly to a distress call concerning a stranded feline trapped atop a towering tree yesterday (Apr 3)

The white-furred feline, named Uban, has been trapped in the tree since Tuesday (Apr 2) evening, playfully ignoring his owner’s pleas to come down.

Concerned about the cat’s wellbeing, the owner reached out to the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA Sarawak) for assistance.

After much anticipation, the firefighters rescued the cat from the towering tree and he was lovingly embraced by his owner upon their reunion.

BOMBA Sarawak director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the department had assisted in 15 cases to rescue mischievous felines which had found themselves stuck on trees.

While there is no specific procedure to handle such cases, he said the department’s main priority is to ensure the safety of its personnel and the felines.

“Our rescue operation for this kind of cases is very straightforward, and we have never encountered any complications. When our personnel approach the feline, it never resists and welcomes the help to get down,” he said.

Noting how Uban’s owner was shy and felt somewhat embarrassed when she had to reach out for the department’s help, Khirudin said the public should never hesitate to call for help.

“The department follows the ‘No Wrong Door Policy’ meaning we are ready to assist regardless of the circumstances or location. The safety of the public, including the well-being of animals, is our top priority,” he said.
