KUCHING: Today marks the first day of the 2023/2024 school session where pupils are enthusiastic and excited to return to school after a five-week break.

New Sarawak Tribune observed the atmosphere at a primary school here – Sekolah Kebangsaan Petra Jaya.

Since 6am, the school was filled with parents escorting their children to their respective classrooms.

Pupils ranging from primary one to primary six can be seen arriving in their school uniforms and sportswear.

Some of them felt nervous or a little scared because of all the new things.

The pupils and parents were greeted by Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man as they entered the main entrance, where the comic-book character was seen giving fist bumps to students as a form of encouragement.

The school staff were also seen welcoming the pupils and parents, where welcoming gifts were distributed to students.

Along the corridor, parents can be seen holding their children’s hands tightly as a way to show support and encouragement to those who have just enrolled in primary school.

Remarkably, no one among the new pupils cried, perhaps due to their high spirits and excitement.

Many of them see this an opportunity to meet new friends and teachers.

Despite the unfavourable weather this morning, the school bell rang at 7.30 am, which marked the official start of the new academic session.
