SIBU: The next five years will be a critical period to develop Sibu, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

He said Sibu has experienced slow development for the past 10 years and this has led to negative reactions among the youth, especially young people.

“However, I believe that the next five years are crucial, and there will be many large-scale construction projects in Sibu.

“This includes the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan involving an area of 497 acres that will be rebuilt by the Sarawak government,” he said when officiating at a movie viewing programme for charity purpose at King’s Trioplex here recently.

In this regard, Chieng called on young people to work with the Sarawak government to develop Sibu like other cities by contributing their services and expertise.

“Perhaps everyone is still studying or already working. However, we should be more sensitive to current events including the development of our own hometown.

“So, come home to develop Sibu together. Sibu needs a lot of development and more changes. I believe everyone here is looking forward to it,” he added.

The programme jointly organised by the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek Service centre and SUPP Bukit Assek NewBees was aimed to raise funds for the Sibu Autistic Association’s running expenses.
