Flash floods hit Lawas

LAWAS: Several villages in this district were hit by flash floods following a continuous downpour that began on Saturday.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre (PGO), the villages included Kampung Pangalih Jalan Merapok, Kampung Karangan, Kampung Seberang Mission and Kampung Luagan.

Lawas Airport was also reported to be flooded.

Areas that were inundated in Lawas town included Jalan Pengiran Haji Matusin and Jalan Trusan Lawas traffic light junction.

In some areas, the water level was reported to be three feet high.

At least 10 people from two families had been evacuated from their homes and are staying with their relatives.

However, no evacuation centre has been opened as the flood situation is still under control.
