KUCHING: Food traders at Stutong Ramadan Bazaar here are the gastronomy ambassadors for the city of Kuching to introduce Sarawak to foreign tourists through the food available in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with a bazaar like this, traders could increase their income while sharing traditional or popular food in Sarawak, especially when the city of Kuching gained recognition from the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021.

“We should feel proud because Kuching, Sarawak now stands on par with 36 cities around the world that got the international recognition.

“With the recognition, the people of Sarawak can introduce traditional and local food to tourists from abroad when they visit Sarawak.

“They can take this opportunity to taste the delicious food in Sarawak and introduce Sarawak’s specialties and uniqueness to the world,” he said.

He said this in his text of speech read by Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESTY), Dr Hazland Abang Hipni during the officiating ceremony of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Stutong Ramadan Bazaar at Stutong Community Market car park here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari also said that every trader should always pay attention to cleanliness when conducting business, not only in terms of the cleanliness of the business site but also in the preparation of foods and drinks.

“Emphasising on cleanliness is to avoid any unwanted incidents to our customers such as food poisoning. Every trader needs to have ethics in business dealings by selling with honesty as well as selling food that is tasty, clean and the ingredients are halal,” he added.

More than 160 food and drink stalls are operating at the Stutong Ramadan Bazaar this year from March 23 until April 21.
