SERIAN: Malaysia is committed to International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s green initiative and is focusing its efforts on four levels.
Addressing delegates to the 106th sessions of the ILO Conference in Geneva on Monday, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot named the four broad areas as the global level, national level, sectors and enterprises level, and ILO policies and practices level.
The ILO conference from June 11 to 13 themed, ‘Work In A Changing Climate: The Green Initiative’, brought over 4,000 delegates from around the globe to discuss the most pressing labour related issues facing the world today.
He said at the global level, Malaysia would seek to boost the ILO’s standing as the global centre of excellence on current and future implications for the world of work, climate change and the transition to a greener economy.
At the national level, he said Malaysia would strive to enable countries to adopt and implement employment and social policies on climate change
He said at the sectors and enterprises level, Malaysia intended to incorporate ILO’s core values and practical approaches in industry policy frameworks for environmental sustainability,
He further elaborated that at the ILO policies and practices level, Malaysia would seek to increase the understanding and use of recommendations contained in a joint study conducted by his ministry and ILO on employment, social protection and human resources manpower requirement for green technology in Malaysia.
“Malaysia sees the need for this joint study to be conducted in view of the need to raise the capacity of the government and social partners for a clearer understanding of the prevalence of green jobs across the country as well as to identify entry points for further green jobs creation.
“My ministry took a positive view of the outcomes of the joint study and is committed to ensuring that discussions on issues of green job mapping, construction of database, capacity development and developing the occupational standards on green skills can take on a more positive shape in the forthcoming years,” Riot said.
He said to accelerate efforts towards greater economic use of green technology, “we pledge our cooperation with ILO in respect of green jobs.
