Four-month prison sentence for drug abuse

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to four months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for abusing Methamphetamine and Amphetamine drugs six years ago.

The accused, Mohd Arbi Sufian, 23, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

The offence took place at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters around 10.15 am on May 18, 2017.

He was charged under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and sentenced accordingly.

Upon conviction, he could be fined a maximum of RM5,000 or imprisoned for up to two years, and he would also be required to undergo supervision by an officer for a period of not less than two years and not exceeding three years.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah ordered that the accused be placed under police supervision for two years after serving the prison sentence.

Based on the case facts, the initial urine screening of the accused tested positive for drugs during his detention at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters.

Subsequently, the accused’s urine sample was taken to the Pathology Department of the Sarawak General Hospital, and the report confirmed the presence of Amphetamine and Methamphetamine drugs in his system.

The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
