Four MoUs inked to develop regional fibre optic network

MIRI: The state government is a step forward towards making Sarawak a digital hub to increase economic growth through digital economy in three years’ time.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg said four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) had been signed between Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd (Danawa) and five companies, namely PT INDOSAT Tbk, PT Trans Hybrid Communication, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, PT Cendikia Global Solusi and Connectloud, to develop the Trans Nusantara Regional Fibre Optic Network.

He said Trans Nusantara Regional Fibre Optic Network would connect Sarawak, Indonesia and Brunei to the rest of world and the establishment of the network would provide high speed Internet to the users.

“High speed Internet is vital to transform our economy into digital. The state government is very eager in promoting the growth of digital economy, thus making Sarawak the digital hub of the region,” said Abang Johari after witnessing the MoUs Signing ceremony for the Trans Nusantara Fibre Optic Cable here, on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, The Chief Minister disclosed that the government also would narrow the digital gap between urban and rural areas.

The rural people would also benefit from the digital economic initiatives by opening up opportunities for them to market their products and services directly to the outside world, he said.

“The agriculture sector is expected to boost through the establishment of digital economy. We can perform transactions online via high speed Internet with outsiders to market our farm products.

“The tourism industry could also be enhanced by providing direct market to the outsiders,” he added.
