KUCHING: Two friends were sentence to a fine of RM500 or three weeks in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today (July 10) for failing to provide a reasonable explanation for having a bag of electrical wires on Jalan Pasir Pandak last Wednesday.

Saufi Berahim, 48, and Mohd Shahrin, 33, pleaded guilty when the charges were read to them by Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

They were charged under Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offenses Ordinance along with Section 34 of the Penal Code. This means that if they’re found guilty, they could face a three-month jail sentence and a fine of RM500.

The incident allegedly took place on July 5, around 3.55 pm at Jalan Pasir Pandak. The charges state that police officers from the Santubong police station noticed something suspicious about the two men. They were carrying a white bag and inside it were electrical wires and tools that appeared to be stolen.

After investigating the matter further, the police discovered that the two friends had stolen the wires from an abandoned building. They planned to sell them in order to get money to buy drugs. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t provide a good reason for having the wires in their possession, which led to their arrest.

Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang handled the prosecution, while the two accused didn’t have legal representation.
