SIBURAN: Stephanie Amber, 28, started her home-based biscuit and cake business here in 2016 after quitting her job as a sales assistant.

She used her salary as her capital.

“I still remember the first thing I sold were biscuits. After that, I sold birthday cakes,” she recalled.

“When I was younger, I used to watch my mother and aunt making cakes and biscuits during the festive season. I also watched recipe vlogs on YouTube,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

Because of a growing interest in making biscuits and cakes, soon she began to participate in birthday cake classes, bun making classes and layer cake classes.

She also participated in a food handling course because it was mandatory for anyone in a food-related business.

Now Stephanie is a full-time baker and her business is her only source of income.

“My business hours are from 9 am to 9 pm every day. I run this business at Jalan Taman Buaya Jong Siburan housing estate.

“I am very proud to do everything myself from measuring the ingredients, baking the cookies and cakes, packing, washing the baking equipment and delivering the orders,” she said.

Besides making birthday cakes and biscuits, Stephanie is working hard to meet the increasing demand for layer cakes from customers.

Customers love her Cheese Tarts, Melted Cheese Cakes and Snow Coconut Cheese desserts.

“During 2020, my business was greatly affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My customers at that time were only people who lived in nearby areas,” she explained.

The cakes Stephanie sells vary in prices from RM6 to RM250, depending on the decorations requested by the customer.

The more decorations requested, the higher the cost of a cake. Usually, she will prepare all customer orders before she makes deliveries.

“I am very grateful that many people know about my business. I am encouraged by positive words and support from my family, friends and even my regular customers,” she said.

Stephanie wishes to own a shop one day so that her biscuits and cakes will be known to the public far and near.

“I advise small traders out there to never give up. Never stop trying and praying,” she said.
