KUCHING: The Gawai Bazaar 2024 will be held in conjunction with the State-level Gawai Dayak Celebration 2024 at MJC Batu Kawa for the first time here from May 16 to 26.

Serembu assemblyman and deputy chairman of the Gawai Bazaar 2024 working committee Miro Simuh said the bazaar will showcase 180 booths, offering food, beverages, and handicrafts, and providing small entrepreneurs with opportunities to advance their businesses.

“Many activities will be carried out, especially in the evenings, with booths operating from 2 pm to 12 midnight.

“We also have a main stage for various cultural performances and singing by local artists.

“I urge the public, especially the Dayak community celebrating Gawai on June 1 and 2, to visit Gawai Bazaar 2024 for essential purchases like cakes and biscuits before heading back to their villages or longhouses,” he said.

He made these remarks during an interview with the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) after chairing the Gawai Bazaar working committee meeting at the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) office here yesterday (Apr 17).

The fourth edition of the event will be officiated by Deputy Premier cum chairman of the Gawai Bazaar 2024 working committee Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, on May 17.

This year, the Bidayuh community leads the organisation of the Sarawak state-level Gawai celebration.

Gawai Bazaar 2024 will be held with the symbolic ‘maad kasah,’ meaning ‘opening the mat’ in Bidayuh language, signifying the beginning of the Gawai festivities.
