KUCHING: The government should provide grants and incentives to the private sector to develop the pepper industry, said Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin.

The Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) quoted him as saying that the incentives could enhance industry engagement between the private sector and the pepper sector on a larger scale.

“Our country used to be the world’s largest producer of pepper, but today we have fallen to fifth place.

“Revamps and new strategies need to be introduced urgently for this industry to grow again because Sarawak pepper is the best in the world,” he said when debating on the Supply Bill (Budget 2023) in Parliament recently.

On other matters, Willie hoped that Sabah and Sarawak would continue to receive allocations for development projects to further develop both states.

“This includes my constituency in Puncak Borneo ” he added.
