BETONG: The implementation of glow-in-the-dark road marking technology is believed to minimise accidents, according to Nurulhuda Nadziri, the dean of the Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies and Sustainability at i-CATS College.

She explained that bright road lines are the most effective way to enhance road safety for everyone. She added that well-lit road markings reduce confusion among drivers, thereby minimising the chances of collisions when the route is clear and well-lit.

“Illuminated lines increase the likelihood that drivers will follow them appropriately,” she said.

During a discussion about the suitability of this technology in the state, Nurulhuda, who is also a senior lecturer, noted the importance of proper road sign lighting for making driving more comfortable, especially at night.

She stressed that drivers can remain vigilant and comfortable for longer periods with well-lit road markings.

Furthermore, Nurulhuda pointed out that glow-in-the-dark road lines contribute to drivers’ awareness of road structures, enhancing color and diversity awareness.

“With the use of different colours for road lines, various road signs such as centre lines and side lines can be better distinguished. Illuminating road lines makes it easier for drivers to see clearly and identify the direction of the lane, as well as pedestrians and cyclists.”

The Mathematics Centre for Advisory Resources and Education (m-CARE) consultant added that the latest technology is applied in the production of glow-in-the-dark road lines. A smart and automatic lighting system, which responds to surrounding light levels and traffic, can be programmed for activation and deactivation.

“To make bright road lines more effective, technologies such as smart streetlights or phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark paint can be used.”

Stressing the importance of regular maintenance, Nurulhuda stated, “Regular maintenance is key to ensuring the effectiveness and reliability of the streetlight system, including illuminated road lines.”

She added that the implementation of glow-in-the-dark road markings signifies a significant step forward in improving road safety.
