MIRI: The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Curtin University Malaysia, recently organised a field trip to Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) Miri Power Station.
The primary objective was to deepen students’ understanding of energy generation and distribution, offering them valuable insights into power plant operations and maintenance practices.
Taking place on today (Sept 22), the field trip allowed students to gain firsthand exposure to the maintenance routines, operational procedures, and strategies for troubleshooting implemented at the power station.Organising lecturer Dr Chew Ing Ming expressed apprec
iation for SEB’s support, emphasising the significance of experiential learning in preparing students for the dynamic industry landscape.
“As our department continues to strive for excellence in education and research, forging collaborations with industry partners like SEB creates a robust learning environment where students can cultivate the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their future careers,” he stated in a statement.
During the trip, students were guided by experts from Miri Power Station and had the opportunity to observe the state-of-the-art equipment used in power generation.
They engaged in discussions with industry professionals, delving into subjects such as renewable energy utilisation, sustainable practices, and the challenges associated with meeting electricity demand.
“The visit to Miri Power Station enabled students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, fostering a deeper comprehension of how the theories they’ve studied are put into practice.
“It served as a powerful motivator, inspiring students to excel academically and explore career opportunities in the field of electrical and computer engineering,” the statement noted.
Accompanying the senior electrical and electronic engineering students were students from i-CATS University College Miri (i-CATS Miri), along with lecturers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, including Dr Han Yi Chiew, Dr Salem Mgammal Awadh Nasser Al-Ameri, Veeramani Shanmugam and Valerie Nyellia.
