LUBOK ANTU: Smoked fish is among the most famous delicacies favoured by locals here and also those who come to visit from outside the area.

Sulan Guang has been selling various types of produce at Market Hasil Hutan (market selling jungle produce) Lubok Antu District Council (MDLA) and among them are smoked fish.

“I have been selling (smoked fish) for more than 20 years now and still there are people buying them here in Lubok Antu.

“Even people from outside of Lubok Antu come here to buy smoked fish and also other produce such as vegetables, fruits, freshwater fish, chicken and others,” she said.

At her stall, there are various types of smoked fish with smoky and delicious smells. Some smoked fish are big in size, some medium and some small sized smoke fish and the stall also offers smoked prawns.

Among the types of smoked fish she sells are the Asian glass catfish (ikan lajung), enseluai fish (toli shad), catfish (keli), anchovies and others.

“The prices of the smoked fish here range from RM10 to RM100 per kilogramme, depending on what type of fish the customer purchases.

“Some of these fish are hard to catch or find, so it depends on how much fish I get and then sell it at the market,” she pointed out.

The 52-year-old said that some of the smoked fish are coming from locals who help to get the fish smoked while some even coming from other places as well and she gets them for sale here.

“The profit I make depends on what day it is. If on weekdays, I probably make about RM500 per day.

“On weekends, I make between RM1,000 and RM2,000. During festive seasons, many people come so I can make even bigger profit,” she said.

The mother of four children is hopeful that people will still come to Lubok Antu as there are many types of produce; some are rare, and also come fresh from the forest.
