Gov’t officer detained for outraging modesty of female clerk

MIRI: A male supervisor of a government agency here has been detained for allegedly outraging the modesty of a female clerk inside a meeting room of the office in Piasau Jaya.

Miri Police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said, in the 11.45am incident last Thursday, the victim, aged 24 was alone in the room when the suspect allegedly came in and began hugging and kissing her.

The alleged incident occurred twice on that day.

Prior to the incident, the victim was busy cleaning the conference room after a meeting, when the suspect, aged 35, approached and hugged and kissed her.

When the victim asked the suspect about his inappropriate behaviour, he reportedly replied it was only a hug and instructed her to proceed with her work.

Feeling something was not right, the victim later lodged a police report over the incident.

Acting on the report, a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers picked up the suspect at his office in Piasau Jaya at 6.35pm for questioning.

The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to outrage modesty, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine, or whipping, upon conviction.
