KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asserted that any attempt to destabilise the unity government can no longer rely on the support of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

The Prime Minister was quoted in a report by Free Malaysia Today as saying he had learned from Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg that there were ‘desperate attempts’ by certain parties to persuade GPS to abandon the unity government.

“(Abang Johari) in a firm and consistent manner, rejected (these proposals) and said that he will not entertain any discussion on severing relations between Sarawak and the unity government.

“GPS’ stances are critical in today’s political scenario because a change (of government) can only be done with the backing of GPS and GRS.

“Even if there is an attempt to form a backdoor (government), it can only be done if the opportunity is given by both states,” he told reporters today.

Furthermore, Anwar said he would not write off Barisan Nasional (BN) lynchpin Umno as a partner in the government, stating that both Pakatan Harapan and BN had a good working relationship.

“I have trust in the Umno leadership which is supportive (of the unity government).

“If people want me to write off Umno, saying that I need a new strategy, I won’t do so,” he stressed.

Anwar added that the government is now very stable, crediting Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for fostering positive relations between BN and PH.

Despite Umno’s challenges in winning over Malay voters, Anwar expressed confidence that a grassroots approach and clear communication could help them regain community support.

He said Umno supporters do not detest the party, but rather they were worried about the narrative suggesting DAP’s supposed control over the government, which is a narrative amplified by Bersatu and PAS.

He said this rhetoric has contributed to strong anti-DAP sentiments among the Malay community.
