MIRI: Iguana sightings have kept Miri City Council (MCC) staff busy the last few weeks.
Acting on public complaints, the council together with the Sarawak Forest Corporation (SFC) embarked on an operation to catch the critically endangered green iguanas.
To date, the council has managed to round up seven of these reptiles beginning Feb 7 at the Bulatan Park.
At a full council meeting on Wednesday, Mayor Adam Yii, said the iguanas will be transferred to a secure holding area here for the purpose of conservation education and awareness on the issue of invasive species (exotic wildlife).
“Sarawak complies with the National Action Plan on Invasive Alien Species as these introduced animals have the ability to out-compete indigenous native species,” he said.
Yii said both parties will continue such operations to curb the iguana problem.
These green iguana do not harm or pose dangers to humans but endanger local native species of wildlife.
