KANOWIT: A group of about 50 hawkers staged a demonstration against the Kanowit District Council (KDC) move to relocate them to the bus terminal.

They have been trading at the existing council market near the old St Francis Xavier Primary School, but the council wants them to move to the bus terminal by the end of March.

PKR Kanowit Division chairman George Chen said yesterday that the hawkers were against trading at the bus terminal because they felt that fewer people would go there.

“If they are to move to the bus terminal, the majority of them feel that they cannot earn even RM5 a day,” he said.

However, Chen said the hawkers would only comply with KDC’s request to move out of their present trading site after a suitable venue had been identified.

“They are hoping that the council will listen to their plea and not force them to move to the bus terminal,” he added.
