SIBU: Hawkers at Kampung Usahajaya Baru have requested for a safer place for them to trade.

Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the current place, which is located on the side of the road, posed a danger to both customers and hawkers.

“I have discussed with the Land and Survey Department, Public Health, Environment, and Municipal Services Committee, and the General Purposes and Community Services Committee under the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) together with architects and related parties.

“We have also gone to the village and found a suitable place for them to do business. We plan to provide a piece of land so that they can continue to operate and earn their living,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 30).

Tiong shared that the hawkers originally set up near the entrance of the village to sell drinks and snacks.

“However, due to the busy traffic flow and many students gathering near the hawker area after school, it poses a safety risk.”

“I hope that they can wait for the parties involved to carry out the basic procedures before they are allowed to move and continue operating,” he added.

Tiong also shared that he had gone to Kampung Usahajaya Baru to assess the situation after holding a meeting with the Kampung Usahaja Baru Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and the Rukun Tetangga Committee (KRT).

“Kampung Usahajaya Baru is an area consisting of voters from Dudong, Bukit Assek, and Nangka. I am always concerned about the issues of the locals and ready to help those in need.”

He pointed out that one of the issues was the drainage system.

“The residents of Kampung Usahajaya Baru complained to me that the drainage system needs to be improved immediately.

“The existing system is not enough to accommodate the sudden increase in water quantity during the rainy season, resulting in flash floods. I also feel it needs to be upgraded immediately.”

“Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will be in Sibu on July 1 accompanied by the Sarawak Irrigation Department (JPS) director to attend a briefing on the Sibu Town Drainage System Master Plan.

“An effective water control plan will be introduced during the briefing,” Tiong explained.
