SIBU: The Malaysian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macau is exploring areas of business interests with the ultimate aim of helping the people in the state.

Its chairman Gan Khai Choon told reporters after a dialogue with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) yesterday that with 400 members who have vast experience and exposure in the various fields of business, the chamber is confident Sarawak entrepreneurs will benefit from the initiative.

Gan led a group of 20 members at the dialogue to find out which particular fields they could tap in.

SMC standing committee chairman for Building Control and Town Beautification, Councillor Joseph Chieng represented council chairman Clarence Ting at the one-hour dialogue.

“Our members comprised of 70 percent Malaysians who are either working or having businesses in Hong Kong while the remaining 30 percent are Hong Kongers from various backgrounds.

Taking Sibu as an example, he emphasised that they would be looking at areas much needed by the town.

“It can be infrastructure and tourism facilities. We are also exploring what we can buy such as timber products, pepper, pineapple, sago and palm oil. As we are based in Southern China, we want to help Malaysians,” he said.

He added that they were also helping Malaysian students studying in Hong Kong universities.
