KUCHING: A nine-month-old baby girl who has a very genetic disease is receiving much needed assistance from Hope Place Kuching.

The charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO) disclosed that it was contacted by pediatric doctors in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to assist the baby girl.

“It was noted that the little baby was diagnosed with Fatty Acid Oxidation Defect (Carnitine-Acylcarnitine Translocase Deficiency) not long after her birth.

“Sadly, doctors informed that the babies born with this disease may have a short life expectancy,” said a statement by the NGO yesterday.

Hope Place explained that the disease is a condition where the body has difficulty processing fat from food.

As such, the baby girl is unable to consume any normal baby formula and even breast feeding.

“SGH approached us with the request to provide a special milk powder supplement called Monogen for the baby as they were informed by the Genetic Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) that this milk powder is the best formula for her.

“For starters, we gave seven cans to the baby girl for her to try two days ago as advised by HKL,” it said.

Hope Place assured that it would continue to help for long term if the baby is able to consume the special milk powder without any problems and HKL has given the approval.
