KUCHING: An elderly couple can now breathe a sigh of relief as their burdens have somewhat eased of late.

Siti Subah, 65, and her husband, Farry, 61, who are living at Kpg Lebor, Gedong have been struggling with finances and health issues.

According to a statement by Hope Place, Siti was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for more than a month in November last year due to her severe gastric ulcer.

“After being released, she is now at home and uses a suction machine and is on tube feeding.

“Still physically very weak, Siti needs assistance whenever she moves or goes to the bathroom,” it said.

Being the breadwinner of the household, Farry supported his family from the small amount of black pepper that he sells.

Besides taking care of his farm, he has single-handedly takes care of his wife and his 83-year-old mother who is living with him.

“When Siti was in the hospital, Farry had to travel between Gedong and SGH almost daily.

“Although he was offered to stay nearby the hospital, he declined it as he has to take care of his elderly mother back at home.

“As such, he had spent about RM2,000 for medical bills as well as petrol during that period,” it said.

After their plight was highlighted by a concerned SGH social worker, Hope Place came forward and supported Siti with supplies or special milk supplements and adult diapers.

“We thank all the donors who continuously contribute and support those who have the same fate as this couple,” it said.
