SIBU: Intrigued by the promise of earning substantial commissions, a housewife here suffered losses of RM25,105.59 instead.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the unfortunate events unfolded on July 5 when the 30-something victim came across a Facebook page and connected with a person named Michele.

“Interested in the suspect’s offer, the victim started her task, which involved clicking on the gmarket.beauty website as many times as possible,” said Zulkipli in a statement today.

Subsequently, the victim was then offered to upgrade her membership to earn higher commissions and was required to make payments.

“She was informed that RM63,000 would be credited to her account. However, until the report was made on July 12, the victim did not receive the promised commissions and realised that she had been deceived,” he said.

Zulkipli said the case is now under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which deals with cheating.

In light of this incident, the public has been urged to exercise caution and scepticism when encountering lucrative job offers on social media platforms.
