KUCHING: The International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) has just launched its Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power) programme, with registration of the inaugural cohort of students scheduled from 21 to 31 March 2017.

Commenting on the new programme, Ting Kung Chuang, Head of the i-CATS School of Engineering highlighted that “the programme prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities across the commercial and industrial sectors within Malaysia and abroad. Our graduates can look forward to careers in power generation and distribution, computer systems, electronics, marine and offshore operations, and manufacturing-based industries. Prior to the completion of the programme, students are required to undergo a four-month internship.

This ensures that the students have the opportunity to learn directly from the industry and gain real-world work experience. On completion of their studies, graduates may also further their studies in a range of degree programmes.”

Ting also shared that, “to facilitate the learning experience of our students, our Power Engineering Labs are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as Power System Simulators, generators, and electrical machinery from TERCO Sweden, a major manufacturer and global provider of equipment for engineering education.”

Madam Siti Syafinah binti Ahmad Hassan, Head of the i-CATS Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power) programme added, “During their studies in the two-and-a-half-year programme, students will take subjects such as electrical circuit theory, digital electronics, electrical machines and drives, electrical power systems, power electronics and renewable energy. With the support and guidance of our team of experienced lecturers, students will develop effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills as well as hone their critical thinking, decision-making and team building skills.”

During the course of their studies at i-CATS, engineering students also appreciate the importance of innovation and technological advances in fostering an environmentally sustainable society.

In this respect, a major point of pride is the i-CATS Green Technology Laboratory which enables students to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the study of hydro power technology, solar photovoltaic technology, wind turbine technology and various other sources of renewable energy.

This enriches the engineering curriculum and gives i-CATS students the competitive edge as they prepare for engineering-related careers or further their studies at the degree-level.
