MIRI: A man suffered 70 percent burns to his body and other traumatic injuries on Wednesday evening (Jan 2) when he was electrocuted while climbing a Tudan sub-station transmission tower belonging to Sarawak Energy Berhad.

The tower carries 33 kilovolt (KV) distribution lines in Lorong Mulia 2C.

According to sources, the police together with four Resident Committee (RC) crew members from Pujut, Permyjaya, Tudan and Piasau rushed to the place in response to an emergency call at 6.30pm.

An ambulance from Miri Hospital was also seen arriving at the scene.

It was reported that the man fell from a height equivalent to a three-storey building and was fortunate that he landed on thick grass.

When some people came to his aid, he was naked as his clothes had been burnt.

“He managed to walk away for about 100 metres,” said one of the RC crew members, Malateh Mahmud.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately known, was treated at the scene before being taken to Miri Hospital.

The police are investigating the incident as unauthorised access to the utility tower.

A police report has been lodged by Sesco regarding the incident. The report was lodged at the Lutong Police Station.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed the receipt of the report on the incident.

It is believed that the climber was actually attempting to break into the sub-station; he is currently in a coma.

Sources said damage caused by the intruder could come up to around RM20,000.
