IPOH: In doing his part to promote the spirit of patriotism, a restaurant owner here, is offering customers discounts of up to 20 percent to those who come in clothes or accessories emblazoned with the Jalur Gemilang or other patriotic motives, when dining at the premises.

Mohammad Zarilan Ellias, 60, said the special discount is also given to customers born on Aug 31 or whose birthday falls on a Sunday during the National Month.

Mohammad Zarilan, the operator of Terengganu Corner located at a food court in Jelapang, said having worked at the National Archive for 39 years, he has always been inspired to keep the sense of patriotism alive.

“I have just retired and throughout my service, I was involved in various Independence Day activities and programmes at public and private offices, schools and higher learning institutions.

“So, I want to continue this legacy until the day I die. It is my duty to cultivate the spirit of independence, devotion and unity, especially among the younger generation,” he said when met by Bernama recently.

“Our specialty are the Terengganu delicacies which include nasi dagang, nasi kerabu and laksam cooked according to my wife’s recipe from the east coast state.

“As for Penang food, the mi rebus, mi mamak and Penang laksa are the favourites,” he said.

A check by Bernama at the premises found the entire restaurant gaily decorated with the Jalur Gemilang and most of the customers dressed in patriotic T-shirts and accessories expressing love for the country.

A customer Saifurnizam Ya’akob, 33, who enjoyed the discount for wearing a Jalur Gemilang shirt, said he was excited as he has never come across such a promotion during the National Month.

“This is the first time I see those showing their patriotic spirit rewarded. This helps build the momentum and adds to the excitement ahead of Independence Day on August 31,” he said.
