KUCHING: The village security and development committee (JKKK) Bintawa and Sarawak Community Policing Association (SCPA) has launched a community WhatsApp group called the ‘Bintawa Community Security Guard’.

According to SCPA secretary David Hii Chin Loung, the WhatsApp group was set up in view of the recent break-ins and thefts occurring in the housing areas at Bintawa.

“As such, the purpose of the WhatsApp group is for the local residents at Bintawa to share information and alert each other of potentially suspicious people or activities around their neighbourhood,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 4).

He said such information shared in the WhatsApp group was very important as it could create awareness and may prevent a crime from occurring.

“A strong community bond may also prevent others from attempting criminal activities at that particular neighbourhood,” he stressed.

In the meantime, he said SCPA Bintawa members have also distributed crime prevention leaflets to residents today (Oct 4) to promote more crime prevention awareness among the local community.

“JKKK Bintawa chairwoman, Kapitan Tay Kim Geok is also supportive and has encouraged more residents to join the SCPA to participate in patrol activities around their neighbourhood,” he said.

Therefore, Hii said SCPA would like to encourage more cooperation from residents to ensure the safety and prosperity of their local community.
