Joint bid to keep entertainment spots free of drugs

KUCHING: Anti-drug enforcers are planning to work closely with the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to stop entertainment spots from becoming drug dens.

National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak director Abdul Hamedie Ibrahim said this is because the metropolitan area has a lot of entertainment spots.

“Going to bars or clubs is fine as long as there is no drug use, otherwise, problems may arise.

“In order to prevent drug use in nightclubs, we will make a request to MBKS,” he added.

He said this at the launch of the Anti-Drug Awareness Programme with KMC Flat Residents, here Sunday which was also attended by Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

According to data from the previous year, there were 10,000 drug addicts, abusers and pushers in Sarawak, which Abdul Hamedie described as highly troubling.

He said between 70 and 80 per cent of drug abusers are young individuals with syabu contributing to almost 90 per cent of drug use in this area.

But to ensure drug-related concerns as well as other social issues are addressed, he stressed the importance of implementing drug prevention awareness initiatives at the community level.

“This is because the drug issue is not only caused by drugs, but is also related to the issue of poverty, dropping out of school, not attending school, smoking and so on,” he said.
