KAPIT: Kapit Chinese community leader Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo has proposed that three Chinese associations here jointly organise a Chinese New Year (CNY) gathering next year.

“Chinese New Year 2020 falls on January 25. I am proposing three associations, namely Foochow, Hokkien (Chiang Chuan) and Cantonese (Kwang Tung) form a joint committee to organise the gathering.

“We invite ministers and also non-Chinese leaders to attend it,” added Tan who is also chairman of Kapit Chiang Chuan Association.

He proposed the idea while addressing the Kapit Kwang Tung Association’s Mooncake Festival gathering cum the Students’ Excellent Studies Cash Incentives presentation ceremony here recently.

“I shall call for a meeting soon with the chairmen of the three associations to further discuss the proposal.  The Chinese are a minority in Kapit. We ought to work closely together to preserve our tradition and customs,” he added.
